NEWS: Pixar's Announces Next Film 'Luca' For Summer 2021

After a string of sequels in recent years, it seems that Pixar is focusing on telling original stories for the time being, with both of their 2020 releases, the already-released Onward and the upcoming Soul, being entirely new stories. The studio is hoping to keep their streak of originality alive, as, today, they announced their next film Luca, which will be another original feature

Directed by Enrico Casarosa in his feature debut and produced by Andrea Warren, the official synopsis is as follows:

"Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface."

In a statement to Variety, Casarosa said of the film:

"This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca. So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

The film is slated to hit theaters next summer.

This gives off strong Call Me By Your Name meets The Shape of Water meets Studio Ghibli vibes, a combination that I didn't know I needed but am beyond excited to experience.
